Each year, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) collects data about the structure and operations of accredited medical schools. Aggregate data are used to inform public policy making and provide accountability to the public on the content and methods of medical education. The system includes three questionnaires: the LCME Part I-A (Annual Financial) Medical School questionnaire collects data on the revenues and expenditures for U.S. medical colleges; the LCME Part I-B (Student Financial Aid) Medical School Questionnaire collects data on financial assistance, grants, loans, work-study, and educational indebtedness for medical students; and the LCME Part II Annual Medical School Questionnaire collects data on operational characteristics of the educational program leading to the M.D. degree.

Accredited medical schools in the U.S.
The LCME Part I-A questionnaire is administered by the Association of American Medical College's (AAMC) Division of Medical School Services and Studies. It is a mail survey, sent to medical school deans and designated principal business officers. The LCME Part I-B, administered by the AAMC cluster on Medical School and Faculty Studies, is a mail questionnaire sent to medical school financial aid administrators. Responses are compiled for the Annual Student Financial Aid Report. The LCME Part II is a web-based survey administered by the American Medical Association's (AMA) Department of Data Acquisition Services. Collective responses are summarized in an annual report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Collective information from the three surveys is transferred to the AAMC's Medical School Profile System, available online to members of AAMC-affiliated institutions.
